Custodians of Our Planet

My mission is to do all I can to make sure my kids, grandkids and beyond have a safe, beautiful planet to live on. I can't stop people from using single use plastics or stop big companies from dumping their waste into our waterways but there are a lot of things we can do to decrease our carbon footprint. If everyone did their part, we really could make a difference in slowing down climate change.

Learn How to Make an Impact Below
Realistic Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

You may not be able to do all of these but every little bit counts. Some are big and some are small so see what fits with your life or look for ways you might be able to tweak your life to make some of these changes. We've done the things with stars next to them

Switch to Renewable Energy or at Least Reduce Your Energy Consumption
  1. Switch to a green energy supplier

  2. *Replace all light bulbs with LED bulbs

  3. *Properly insulate your home

  4. *Install Solar Panels

  5. Install a solar hot water heater

Change the Way You Get Around
  1. *Take public transportation

  2. Carpool with friends or co-workers

  3. Walk or ride a bike - even if it's just once or twice a week

  4. *Drive a hybrid or electric car (prices have come down dramatically)

  5. *Restrict your flights. If you travel for work, see if you can have more meetings via Zoom

Reduce How Much You Buy, Where You Buy and Buy Second Hand
  1. *Buy less. Think before you purchase. Do you really need it?

  2. *Curb your impulse buying. When buying online, leave it in your cart for 24 hours before purchasing. If you still feel you need it then go ahead.

  3. *Avoid Fast Fashion. Purchase items that will stand the test of time.

  4. *Buy clothing from thrift stores or the Goodwill. My older daughter hasn't bought anything new (except bras and undies) in over 2 years

  5. *Buy from companies who have sustainable values

  6. Invest in sustainable companies and put your money in 'green funds'

  7. *Buy paper products made from bamboo (toilet paper, paper cups, plates, toothbrushes)

  8. *Use washable/reusable make-up sponges, cotton rounds and Q-tips

  9. Don't buy products that contain microplastics

  10. *Buy old fashioned laundry powder instead of liquid or sheets (which have microplastics)

Change What You Eat
  1. *Eat more fruits and veggies

  2. *Limit meat - especially beef or go vegetarian or vegan

  3. If you must eat meat and fish, buy from sustainable sources

  4. *Buy local produce/meat and eggs that didn't have to be shipped long distances to get to your table

  5. *Get your own chickens (they're great fun!!)

  6. *Try not to waste food. You'll be saving money along with the planet

  7. *Compost. If you can't have an outdoor compost bin then get a Lomi (we LOVE our Lomi)

Get Involved
  1. *Become a Planet Champion

  2. *Talk to your town, boss, landlords and schools and about changing to renewable energy

  3. *Vote for public officials that support climate initiatives or run for office yourself!
