FOOD
Welcome
Food is a big part of our lives. In theory, food is simply fuel, but in reality, it's COMPLICATED! We love it, we hate it, it's social, it's emotional, and it's addictive! And unfortunately, over the last 75 years, it has gotten REALLY COMPLICATED! Here in America, processed foods have become a mainstay in our diets. Many highly processed foods are made with a litany of bad stuff, like saturated fats, added sugar, and sodium, not to mention the chemicals that are added make it pretty and last longer! These foods contribute to the obesity epidemic, chronic inflammation, and diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Learn more about processed foods in Wild Health's article

Eating Healthy on a Budget
Avoid paragraph ingredients: Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible; focusing on fresh produce, lean meats, and whole grains
Plan meals: Plan a weekly menu of balanced meals like this easy Margarita Pizza Quesadilla from Eating European!

Shop with a list and after you've eaten: A list can help you avoid impulse buys and extra trips to the store and you won't give in as easily on a full stomach!

Buy in season: In-season produce is cheaper and tastier.

Buy frozen: Frozen fruits and veggies are often cheaper and last longer than fresh
When to buy organic: If you eat the skin of fruits and vegetables, choose organic. For produce like bananas, pineapple, or avocados, stick to cheaper, conventionally grown items.
Get Back to Basics
Convenience doesn't have to be bad for you. Here are some things that are just as easy (and cheap) as their processed counterparts:

No need to buy those processed sugar-filled packets of "Instant Oatmeal."Poor boiling water over regular old-fashioned oats, cover for 5 minutes, add a little honey and it's done! I get fancy and add dried fruit and chia or pumpkin seeds and some honey!

Crack an egg into a ramakin cover it with water and pop it in the microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute. Then throw an english muffin in the toaster. Drain the egg, put between the muffin halves with salt and pepper and you've got an Egg McMuffin that's healthy, fast and cheap!

Replace the sugar! Honey and maple syrup (the real stuff) are great substitutes in Coffee, tea, on cereal, in yogurt, or drizzled over fruit.

Buy frozen fruit and munch on them for a refreshing snack. My favorites are blueberries and sliced peaches.
